Resources
California law defines who may use the titles paralegal and legal assistant and sets education and continuing education standards for the profession. The SFSU Paralegal Studies Certificate meets these requirements by offering more than 24 semester units of coursework through an accredited institution. We also provide continuing education courses that meet the standards of Business and Professions Code Section 6450 et seq.
Under the law, a paralegal or legal assistant is someone employed or contracted by an attorney, law firm, corporation, government agency or other entity who performs substantial legal work under the supervision of an attorney. This definition distinguishes paralegals from legal document assistants, who provide services directly to the public and must be separately registered.
Paralegal duties may include:
- Case planning and management
- Legal research and client interviews
- Drafting and analyzing legal documents
- Collecting and organizing technical information
- Representing clients before certain agencies when allowed by law
Employers hold high standards for paralegals. Most law firms require formal paralegal education, with larger firms often requiring a bachelor’s degree. Strong writing, communication, organizational and computer skills are also expected.
