David Goldstein Memorial Scholarship

The David Goldstein Memorial Scholarship honors our longtime criminal law instructor, who taught in the Paralegal Studies program for 30 years and championed social justice in the field. The scholarship is open to admitted SFSU Paralegal Studies Certificate students planning a career in criminal law. Two awards of $3,000 are offered each fall and spring.

Application Periods

  • Fall: September 7 – October 31
  • Spring: February 7 – March 31

To apply, you must:

  • Have a 3.5 GPA or higher in Paralegal Studies courses
  • Have completed at least one semester in the program
  • Have at least one semester remaining after the term in which you apply
  • Be enrolled in or have completed the Criminal Law class, or have internship/volunteer experience in criminal law
  • Submit an essay on your career plans in criminal law and commitment to social justice (see Essay Guidelines)

Your essay should:

  • Describe your career plans as a paralegal or law student with a focus on social justice in criminal law
  • Be 2–3 pages, typed in 12-point font and double spaced
  • Serve as a personal statement (no legal research required)
  • Address your financial need and how this scholarship will help you complete the certificate

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Paralegal Studies faculty. Students will be scored on:

  • Quality of the essay
  • Writing skills
  • Career and educational goals that reflect David Goldstein’s commitment to social justice in criminal law
  • Financial need
  • Education, work experience and/or community service
